Roaming Retirees, Darrell and Sherry

About this sitter

We’re the Hamiltons, Darrell and Sherry. We are nomadic retirees who technically live in South Dakota, but that is really only because governments require that we be from somewhere. In reality we are just traveling to places that fit some of the things that we want to see or accomplish and then fit in family visits as we can. To make it extra complicated, our families live all over the place. As we travel we like to fit in occasional house sits because the house sits almost always get us off the road most traveled and sometimes to places we would not have considered.

Why they want to house sit

We have found that occasional house sitting has put us in places we would not necessarily have chosen if we were just looking on a map. It seems that most internet resources are devoted to pushing people to the main tourist attractions. We like those, but we also want to occasionally visit places that are normal everyday places to live.

Their experience

We’ve done house sitting in the UK and New Zealand and have 2 scheduled for the US (on different apps). In total we have done 8 sits (3 with dogs and 5 with cats). Most have been for a week or a little longer, but we have also done a 2-week stay in London, England and a 1-month sit in New Plymouth, New Zealand. We have enjoyed the longer sits a lot.

What can they bring to the assignment

We try to remain flexible in the assignments by not scheduling them near each other and trying to arrive in the area a day or two early.
We have many years of experience with dogs, cats, rabbits and birds. Darrell also did a cow sit back when he was a teen. We have had pets of our own through the years and enjoy getting to know new ones. We think of ourselves as grandparent type sitting -- spoil them for a few days and give them back to the parents.
