We are looking for an adventuresome soul (or family) who would like to experience first hand living in a vibrant Mexican barrio with caring neighbors and wonderful markets and food close by. In just two blocks, you reach a beautiful beach, and in less than a mile, you reach the active center of this tourist town. Local transportation is frequent, inexpensive and reliable. We also hope to find someone who would enjoy living with two very independent and loving cats and who would respect and value the home as we do.
The primary responsibilities the house sitter(s) will have are for the two older cats, to make sure they always have plenty of food and water and care if they need it. The other primary responsibility is the garden which sometimes requires daily watering. Finally, the house sitter will need to maintain a clean house to keep it from becoming invaded by unwanted critters.
The house is about 3 blocks from the ocean with a beach primarily for surfers; but a gentler, swimming beach is a 10 minute, (15 peso) bus ride to the neighboring town of Melaque. Several Barra hotels allow day use of their pools for a small fee. Casa Azul is in "Barrio Nuevo", a lively and friendly neighborhood with a great local grocery store, and many local businesses (taco restaurants, butchers, fish market, tortilleria, stationary store (papeleria) laundry, etc.). Next door to our house is Concha's tienda for essentials (eggs, milk, tortillas, toilet paper, etc.) The house has a walled in garden and outdoor areas to enjoy. It is less than a mile from "el centro", the jardin and heart of the village with many shops and a wide variety of restaurants, ending in the malecon, a walkable breakwater between the ocean and the lagoon. There are wonderful local restaurants, hotels and a water park. We have been regular visitors for almost 20 years and know almost all our neighbors (vecinos).
Some Spanish is helpful but not required. Every winter, Barra and nearby Melaque are flooded with "snowbirds" (primarily from Canada) who come to enjoy the warm weather and lovely beaches and therefore most locals know a bit of English. However local folks are appreciative if you try your best to speak their language. Local Spanish teachers are plentiful. Also, it can get very warm in the summer months, but Casa Azul has heat pumps (which cool) in every bedroom and an air conditioner (extra electric expense) in the living area. There are fans also in every room and one the front patio.
