About this assignment

You love cats, enjoy caring for a lovely and comfortable home, access to nature, enjoy walking or biking to do your errands, and exploring new country. Maybe you are also an artist, writer, wooden boat enthusiast, sailor or musician? Perhaps someone who wants to nestle in and focus on a body of work for a month while fall settles in western Washington. You are someone who would enjoy the charm of our little coastal town and bird refuge facing home while caring for our sweet cat, Jerry. You have experience with house sitting and can give us glowing references, are fully vaccinated and it's a plus to have a background check (it's OK if you don't, we can do one on you.)

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Our senior cat Jerry is 19, gets fed twice a day, litter cleaned and new water daily. She also needs blood pressure medicine twice a day and gabapentin at night. She loves a lap, she'll make a wonderful companion as you relax and enjoy the view, read, or watch TV. She's kind of a dog-kitty in her old age. Jerry has lots of toys to play with when not sleeping and loves to head-butt you for pets.

What are the good features of the property and location

Our house is large and spacious with tons of light and an amazing view of the Kah Tai bird refuge. Port Townsend is on the Quimper Peninsula, off the Olympic Peninsula and is surrounded by the Puget Sound, also called the Salish Sea. Two good grocery stores and a hardware store are within walking distance. The historic center of Port Townsend includes unique shops, a great movie theater, restaurants and coffee/tea shops, and about three book stores. The Maritime Center and The History and Art museum are also found there. That area is also easily walkable at a little over a mile. Also, miles of forested trails are within a few miles from the house an a wonderful 15 mile bike trail nearby. The Olympic National Park main access (Hurricane Ridge) is about an hour away, the Pacific coast about two hours away. Seattle is about two hours away, accessible by walk-on boat in Kingston or Bainbridge Island or driving on Washington state ferries or driving around. A ferry runs from Port Townsend to Whidbey Island providing access to the Skagit Valley and the North Cascades. Lots of sweet little towns dot the shores Puget Sound/Salish Sea. It's a gorgeous area in the fall and there's lots to explore and enjoy right within our little town and peninsula.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We need someone to truly care for the cat and the house like it was their own. Our previous housesitters were great and we know that Mind My House works really well. We do not allow house guests that are not vetted by us and do have a security camera on the house. Weather wise during that time, anything can happen from rain to sunshine, it changes often that time of year. The area only gets an estimated 21 inches of rain a year.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Testimonials

Fantastic kitty & housesit!

Claire and Jeff were wonderful from the start - great communication, great orientation and welcome when we arrived, thorough written instructions, and were the perfect balance of connected yet relaxed and trusting during their trip. Jerry is the perfect lap companion, and a sweet fur being! Her routines were easy, a little playtime, lots of sleeping in sunbeams, and some fun chirping and head-butting pet & purry time. Their home in Prescott was a treat - 3 minutes walk from a national forest trailhead with various loop options, easy access to town, and a great deck with phenomenal views of the forest and night sky. I would be happy to sit for them again whenever it worked!

A thoroughly enjoyable experience. . .

We spent a wonderful two months in Prescott, looking after Jeff and Claire's home and their loving, affectionate cat, Jerry. The location was spectacular, right on the edge of the Prescott National Forest; if you enjoy hiking or mountain biking you couldn't be better situated. Jeff and Claire made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and were very clear and thorough in explaining the house sitting responsibilities, which were easily managed. If the timing is right we would absolutely return to Prescott and spend some more time with Jerry. . . Craig Cuthbertson and Suzy McInnis
