I'm a full-time freelance and remote-working writer, editor and journalist traveling the world while I've got the chance. In Summer 2024, I gave up my housing and sold my car to spend a couple/few years mainly in Spanish-speaking countries to support my lifelong goal of learning another language.
Longer term housesits are ideal, but two weeks is generally my minimum unless it's just a little time in between other engagements. Overall though, my preference is to really get to know the places I visit — be they cities or villages, oceanfront or mountainside, luxurious or rustic. Other than wanting to stay in a home that's safe, clean and at least moderately comfortable, I'm not picky. I'm in it for the experience!
Some logistical considerations ...
* While high-speed WiFi is appreciated, I'm also looking into getting a Starlink Mini to make sure that my connectivity needs for work are fail-safe.
* I won't be traveling with a car, so use of a vehicle is awesome if that's feasible. But if not, I can be pretty resourceful with walking, biking, public transit or just renting my own wheels if necessary.
Satisfying my wanderlust makes it hard to have pets of my own, so I love spending time with animals when I travel! Bonding with critters definitely makes any place feel a bit more like home ...
On that note, I'm comfortable and experienced caring for house pets and farm animals, alike. I actually used to want to be a large-animal vet, so it's been a few decades but I've even helped deliver a foal and castrate boars. (Not that I plan on doing the latter again anytime soon. But wow, it was memorable.)
I enjoy traveling in order to see where and how other people live — not just to see various sights. Housesitting is therefore ideal for me, as it's that much closer to living like a local.
In addition to cats and dogs — I love all breeds, from chihuahuas to rottweilers — I've also cared for chickens, goats, sheep and horses over the years. I've got a bit of experience with smaller animals like guinea pigs or rabbits, as well as fish. And I'm certainly willing to take care of reptiles or birds, too.
I used to live and work on a farm, and also worked as an herbalist at a shop where we grew and wildcrafted many of the plants we made medicine from. Plus, I've worked at a garden nursery in the past, and for a gardener/landscaper ... In other words: Your plants and yard will be under the capable watch of someone who loves to get her hands in the dirt!
I'm also handy with basic tools — see farming experience above, and I was the caretaker of a rustic cabin in New Hampshire for six years — so rest assured, your home will be well tended, too.
I will treat your home and pets like they're my own, with the utmost respect and care. And I'm happy to stay in touch with updates as often as you like!
