About this assignment

Reliable and Responsible: We’re looking for someone trustworthy and who can maintain the security of the property and ensure everything runs smoothly while we're away.

Adaptable: The area around the property is quite rough, with steep hills leading to the house. So the ideal housesitter should be comfortable withe the physical demands of navigating the terrain.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Dog Care: Our two friendly dogs will need daily attention, feeding, and walks. They’re good-natured and enjoy company, so a dog lover is a must.

Basic Maintenance: Some light maintenance tasks will be required, such as keeping the garden tidy, watering plants, and ensuring that other utilities are working as expected.

What are the good features of the property and location

Key Features of the Property:

Unique Cave Living: Experience a truly one-of-a-kind lifestyle in a 3 ½ bedroom cave house, blending natural, rustic charm with modern living.

Semi-Off-Grid with Solar Backup: The property is equipped with electricity and a reliable solar backup system, ensuring sustainability and independence from the grid.

Breathtaking Alhambra Views: Enjoy stunning views of the Alhambra from the property, one of Spain’s most iconic landmarks.

Private Garden & Barbecue Area: A spacious 72m² garden with a vibrant, Mediterranean feel and an outdoor barbecue area perfect for dining al fresco.

Open-Plan Living/Dining: A spacious and rustic living area with a fully equipped kitchen, ideal for gatherings or quiet relaxation.

Quiet & Culturally Rich Location: Located in Sacromonte, a historic district known for its rich gypsy culture, flamenco roots, and peaceful surroundings, all within walking distance of Granada's city center.

Convenient Public Transport & Walking Access: The house is just a 10-minute walk to Plaza Larga and 20 minutes to the city center, with bus links only 5 minutes away.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

Challenging Terrain: The property is located in a rough area with steep hills, so sitters need to be physically fit and comfortable with the terrain. Walking to and from the house can be demanding.

Semi-Off-Grid Living: While the house has electricity and a solar backup system, it’s not fully on the grid, so some familiarity with off-grid living (e.g., managing solar power) could be helpful.

Dog Care: You will be responsible for two friendly dogs who need daily feeding, companionship, and exercise. A love for animals is essential.

Basic Maintenance: There will be light tasks such as watering the garden, ensuring the solar system is functioning, and keeping the property tidy.

Security Responsibility: As the caretaker, you’ll be responsible for the security of the property and ensuring it is well-maintained during your stay.

Quiet, Secluded Location: The house is in a peaceful area with few neighbors, though it's worth noting that some of the neighbors can be a bit unwelcoming. The area has a rich cultural history, but sitters should be comfortable living in a place where the surroundings may not feel polished or upscale.

Can I bring my own pets?

Cadiar housesit

Ana and I stayed in Ben’s small home in Cadiar for 7 months. Ben is very easygoing and a good communicator. Cadiar is a lovely town with very friendly people and it had everything we needed, for such a small town. The local almonds, olives, olive oil, pomegranates were incredible as well as the Jamon, Vino and fresh lamb... The alpujarra is a very cost effective area to live and has a tremendous community spirit. There are a lot of hikes available right out the door, and one can get by quite nicely without a car. Ben’s house is a work in progress, tiny, and a little chilly in the winter months, but he is constantly upgrading and the hot tub and the rooftop terrace are fantastic.

A nice and easy house sit in an Andalusian mountain village!

We enjoyed this 3,5 months house sit in Cadiar. Ben’s house is small, easy to keep clean and it has a nice roof terrace and a hot tub. It has 4 floors including the roof terrace. The internet connection and speed was good. That was important because of our online business. We did some small DIY jobs and Benjamin is still busy improving his home. We had our own car and we could easily park in front of the house (private parking space). We never saw Benjamin in person, but the communication with him before, during and after the house sit was easy and relax. Cadiar has appr. 1200 habitants. The village is small and everything is walkable. One of the neighbours is very helpfull and interested in new people coming over. The people in Cadiar in general are very friendly and we really enjoyed our stay. We really would like to come back to do a house sit for Benjamin again.

Small but outstanding

Ben's house is in the quiet village of Cadiar, adjacent to the Sierra Nevada national park. The village itself is self-contained, with several supermarkets, hardware stores, and enough bars and restaurants to enjoy. A fresh market comes twice a month. There is public transportation to get in and out of the village, so a car is not necessary. There are plenty of lovely hiking trails around. The house is quite small, suitable for one or two people. Ben is very accessible and responsive if you have any questions. The people in the village are friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Most of them have limited English, so any Spanish that you can speak will prove to be a plus. We stayed over the winter and had a choice of heating the house by wood or gas. Both fuels are available in the village. The kitchen is small, but well equipped with good knives, cutting boards, good quality pans and a large variety of spices. In this environment, you must be comfortable going up and down seriously inclined streets and steep stairs inside the house. Andalusia is a gorgeous part of Spain, with almond and olive trees galore. La Alpujarra is one of the most beautiful spots in Spain and we thoroughly enjoyed our four months in Ben's home.

Charming Pueblo Home in Sierra Nevada

Ben is a first-time home owner. He is remodeling this fun and charming pueblo home and uses it only about 6 months of the year. It's perfectly livable and has lots of small and large DIY projects for those who enjoy that. On the ground floor there is a living space with a a wood-stove and entertainment center (a large TV and play station and other media toys). On the second floor there is a kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen is very well equipped with top of the line pots, knives, spices and even a smoothie maker. The modern bathroom has a fantastic rain shower head. And on the top floor there is a bedroom with a wonderful mattress and a terrace with a tiki bar. And for the more adventurous, there is a rooftop "garden" that has a fire pit. The village has everything you might need! Supermakets, a green-grocer, butchers, pharmacy, health clinic, bars, hair stylists...you name it. The bread trucks come around daily and the gas trucks once a week. The laundromat is nearby. And there is a bus that goes to other villages and to Granada and Malaga daily. We don't have a car and don't think we need one. For those that like to hike, there are lots of hiking trails around. The best part of minding Ben's home is that he is a great communicator. He is accessible and pleasant and will give you answers to your questions right away. It has been a pleasure to mind Ben's home. We will be staying there another four months.
