About this assignment

Careful, quiet person/people who know how to relax in the countryside. And who can enjoy our precious dog! She's Sofi, a 95-pound furry Maremma dog who lives indoors and out. She's quite well trained and affectionate and rather lovely to look at. Loves going on walks with you right out the door. Also, we need someone comfortable with using wood heat, which supplements our lovely passive solar warmth. (We do have reliable additional heat--it's expensive fossil fuel.) There could be snow at that time, but it won't last. You should be prepared with warm outdoor clothing. We seek a clean, organized and careful sitter as we have heirlooms important to us. This is a quiet place to read, write and walk, tour Vermont's other beauties and relax by the fire.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Feed Sofi, let her in and out, and enjoy her. Water the houseplants. Keep everything clean and tidy. You do have to like dogs. Do respect the heirlooms and furniture.

What are the good features of the property and location

Beautiful restored 1880's farmhouse on 10 organic acres surrounded by fields and hills with walking paths into hundreds of acres, in beautiful unspoiled area of Vermont. Not far from the Interstate in Central Vermont. Spacious, refined interior decorated with heirlooms, lots of books; we have broadband here so plenty of cyberspace but no television. "A River Runs Through It" describes this place. This is a beautiful place on a little, clean river set in a gorgeous rural valley. Shopping, restaurants and a modest town center 20 minutes away. Graceful house, plenty of light, big trees, flower gardens. Non-toxic household. Good broadband, nice office space to work in. Big lavish kitchen. 3 hours from Boston and Montreal, 45 minutes from Montpelier and Hanover, NH. Also, we are 20 minutes from shopping, restaurants and bars.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

This is a place to relax and be on the quiet side. Our dog is quite a big presence here, so you need to love dogs. She goes outdoors and indoors several times every day, so you need to be around most of the time. We'll let you know the commands and limitations she's used to. We would prefer no other overnight guests--we would need to grant permission when we meet. This is an area with many dirt roads and it will be mud season, so you need a car with good traction. Our quarter-mile-long road is dirt.

Can I bring my own pets?

Yes
Restrictions: If you bring a cat, Sofi will need to be carefully introduced. She's a guard dog breed but not hyper. She's not used to cats here but respects them when she sees them. BUT, furniture MUST NOT be scratched on and litter MUST be consistently used and placed

Enchanted Rising Mist Farm

My husband and I had the pleasure of minding the farm for Josie and Mark last August and would do it again in a heartbeat. The property is situated right in the center of the beautiful state of Vermont and is as charming, peaceful, and romantic a spot as you could ask for. The house is beautifully restored with gorgeous views from every window, cozy sitting areas and a fantastic, legit farm kitchen. The property: think quintessential pastoral setting tucked into a misty valley. Mark and Josie are very hospitable and, as with other sitters, served up a yummy dinner for us before their departure. We took a thorough tour of the property as well. They gave us a list of "must see's" in the area and good instructions for care and feeding of their homestead and were available if we had questions. If you venture out to the main road for a walk/ride/run, you'll likely meet some of the neighbors who are also quite friendly. You might even be visited at the farm by one bearing gifts from his own garden or hen house! Great stay, great folks.

A Little Paradise! We Miss it Already!

Josie and Mark were the perfect hosts. When we arrived they offered us local artiginal beers, gave us a tour of the absolutely gorgeous property (little pond, hammock, garden, flower beds, front porch with hummingbird feeder, a stream that bends around the front of the house and sparkles with sunlight), then they made us a dinner to die for with veggies straight from the garden - such a gracious gesture, considering they had to leave first thing in the morning. Their house is stylish and comfortable and loaded with great books. We especially loved having our morning coffee on the porch swing, and cooking fresh asparagus from their garden in their sunny, shabby chic farmhouse kitchen. Staying at Josie and Mark's place was truly idyllic - we felt we were in our own tranquil world. One of their neighbors was never too far away to bring us fresh corn or eggs from his farm, or to give us advice. He was a waking farmers' almanac, with all the wisdom and folklore of country life in his veins. Wildlife, delicious meals from the garden, a hammock, a cozy claw-foot tub, a shimmering river and a starry sky unobscured by city lights...just perfect.

Wonderful home, wonderful owners!

Josie and Mark have a lovely and peaceful home in the Vermont countryside, with nature trails right out the back door, and a river running through the front of the property. They warmly welcomed me with a delicious dinner, and their cat was sweet and super easy to care for. This is a spacious, lovely spot for a quiet retreat, cozy fireplace and all, but it's also not far from town and services. A really great housesit!
