About this assignment

We are looking for someone who is responsible, quiet, clean and tidy, friendly, and good with dogs. Since we live in a condo community, it is important to be friendly with the neighbors. We would like someone who spends a lot of time at home, so that River doesn't get too lonely. We need someone who is committed to stay the whole time we are away.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Feeding our dog, River. Taking River out for walks. Bringing in the mail. Keeping condo clean. Watering plants. Communicating any problems to us. Bringing garbage can out to street. Bringing recycling out to street. Clearing snow from deck in winter.

What are the good features of the property and location

Wonderful open-concept living. Great kitchen. Master bedroom and main floor laundry. Fireplace. Sun Room. Lower level family room. Close to Lake Michigan, Spring Lake, and lots of places to walk, hike, cross-country ski, and ice-fishing. Near towns of Grand Haven, Muskegon, Grand Haven, Grand Rapids and Holland. Lots of good restaurants, museums, concerts, and theater nearby.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

Public transportation is someone limited. There is an on-demand bus system called Harbor Transit that runs during the day. Within walking distance to grocery store.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Great fun with pup at Lake Michigan!

I stayed at Barbara, Don and Rica’s house for about 3 weeks in October 2024. I had wanted to travel during fall, to enjoy the season and I’m so glad I did. A few favorites: Proximity to Lake Michigan and other lakes and rivers. I watched the sunset many evenings at North Beach Park. I loved walking the boardwalk area where the Grand River meets the Lake. Fun town center in Grand Haven. Lively, walkable, by the water and great food and shops. If you like lemonade you MUST check out the in house squeezed lemonade at the Toasted Pickle. A MAZ ING. Close to other cities/towns, like Muskegon and Saugatuck. The area is easy to navigate and has that great small town feel. I I got GREAT produce, eggs and flowers at the Farmers Market in Muskegon. House stuff: The house is spacious and had everything I needed to cook and make coffee, the bed was comfy and everything was clean. The house is inviting, and no daily stairs. (basement has stairs but I didn’t have to go down there for anything important) Great TV access and just overall enjoyable. Dog stuff: River the dog is easy and sweet! She has her routine that I followed and all worked out well. She did great in the car when I took her for outings (not a requirement but super fun and easy!) and she’s AWESOME on a leash. I walked her at a busy time in downtown Grand Haven and she stayed right at my side even with dogs and people around. A few things to consider: The house is close to a busy road. It is shielded by a patch of trees/woods so you don’t see the road much. But you can hear it. Not from inside, but when you are outside. I’d say it’s a 5/10 loudness. River is fed every 4 hours. This wasn’t a problem for me, as I found so much to do within 5 miles! I did go up to Muskegon one day and that worked out too. But if you want to do a day trip, it’s something to consider. Overall I had a GREAT time, the family was super kind and helpful. They have a binder with all the info you’d need, and are happy to answer questions. They were great communicators. If you are looking for a relaxing, fun and slower pace by the water, definitely check it out. I’d absolutely Mind this House (and River!) again.

A lovely, cozy housesit with a delightful dog

I housesat for Barbara, Don, and Rica over the winter, and had a wonderful experience. The house was extremely tidy, which made it very easy to move in and out when the time came. The whole family made me feel welcome and at home. They were good communicators, and went out of their way to make sure I had everything I needed. They even left a detailed binder with clear instructions, contacts, and additional info. Honestly, they are just lovely people and I felt really honored to be in their home. The dog River was also kind of like a person! She was very good-natured, aware, and followed me everywhere. River needs to be fed throughout the day and can't be left alone for very long, so this is an ideal housesit for someone who works from home. River is a really, really sweet dog. My experience with the house, River, and family were all very positive!
